To properly prepare for a regatta, you need to think ahead about the necessary clothing. It’s best to wear specialized clothing that protects against rain and wind and is designed for working with the rigging. In addition, you need to make sure you have the necessary equipment for sailing.
On this page, we’ll give you advice on the clothing and gear that we believe are essential on a yacht during a spring or fall regatta. Here is a list of necessary items, gear, and medications.
Clothing for participating in a regatta
1. Yachting shoes - non-slip, secure-fitting, deck-friendly, with clean soles
2. Gloves for handling ropes
3. Waterproof pants and jacket in case of rain
4. Water shoes (to protect against sea urchins, coral, and sharp rocks)
5. Headwear – covering the head and, preferably, the face: a wide-brimmed hat with a drawstring, a bandana, (baseball caps with a drawstring will work)
6. Knee pads (e.g., volleyball knee pads)
7. Lightweight clothing with long sleeves and long pants to provide sun protection and prevent sunburn
8. A tracksuit for cool evenings
9. A windbreaker
10. Thermal underwear (for cold weather)
11. A windproof hat (for the fall regatta)
12. Neck protection (for the fall regatta)
13. Flip-flops
14. Swimming goggles

17. Sunscreen. One for the whole team is fine. (About 30% protection)
18. Earplugs (to protect against a snoring teammate)

22. Dry Bag - a waterproof bag for belongings and a phone (for traveling from anchorages to islands)

1. Several sharp kitchen knives (knives on a yacht are often dull)

5. Paper painter’s tape (for the pianist)
6. Waterproof marker (for the pianist)

8. Tablet with navigation (captain)

13. Fishing line just in case (in case a sail tears along the seam) + needle
